The 7th International Condition Monitoring and Diagnosis (CMD 2018) conference was held in Perth, Western Australia, September 23 to 26, 2018.
The CMD conference was established with the aim of providing a platform for academia, industry, technology providers, consultants, and experts in power engineering to discuss and share ideas, present results, reflect on past experiences, and discuss future trends and technology in the field of electric power apparatus monitoring, fault diagnosis, and asset management.
With the global trend to establish smart grids with intelligent online monitoring and self-healing techniques, the topics covered in this conference have become multidisciplinary, specifically engineering including power, communication, and information technology.
The conference technical sessions were held on the picturesque campus of Curtin University at Bentley, a suburb of Perth. Two tutorial sessions (three hours each) were held on Sunday at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Perth.
The CMD 2018 program involved two social events, namely, a welcome reception on Sunday and a gala dinner on Tuesday, both at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. The opening ceremony, keynote lectures, paper presentations, and closing session were held at Curtin University.
The organizing committee received 230 submissions from 27 countries. All papers were peer reviewed by at least two independent reviewers, and 156 papers from 17 countries were accepted and registered. All papers were scheduled for oral presentations in 24 technical sessions over three days. A total of 180 delegates attended.
The conference featured five eminent keynote presentations by international experts on condition monitoring, asset management, and fault diagnosis, drawn from industry and academia. Keynote speakers included Hulya Kirkici, University of South Alabama, USA; Wojciech Koltunowicz, Omicron Energy Solutions GmbH, Germany; Syed Islam, Federation University, Australia; Robert Fleming, former editor-in-chief of the IEEE Electrical Insulation Magazine, Australia; and Shengtao Li, Xi’an Jiaotong University, China.
The CMD Steering/Advisory Committee meeting was held on Tuesday. The following key decisions were made during the meeting:
- Because some students clearly did not have full confidence in presenting their papers in oral sessions, it was recommended that there should be at least one poster session at future CMDs.
- Two bids to host CMD 2022 were presented by Toshihiro Takahashi, Japan, and Nor Asiah Binti Muhamad, Malaysia. Although the committee was favorably impressed by both proposals, it was decided to select Japan for CMD 2022. Nor Asiah Binti Muhamad was encouraged to bid for CMD 2024 at CMD 2020.
- The chair of CMD 2020 advised that the conference would be held in Phuket, Thailand.
During the closing ceremony, six paper awards were announced, based on technical merit. These awards were sponsored by Omicron, IEEE Power and Energy Society WA chapter, and AmpControl, Australia.
The conference was technically sponsored by the IEEE DEIS and had many other sponsors.
