SUMMARY:Webinar: Space Charge Characteristics in Nanodielectrics
DESCRIPTION:Nanodielectrics have attracted significant attention in last two decades due to their potential applications in a wide range of power devices as “super insulation”. Relying on the strong interaction between nanoparticles and polymer matrix at the interface\, the nanocomposites can be tailored to achieve desired properties\, including electrical\, thermal and mechanical etc. In terms of the enhanced electrical performance of nanocomposites\, there are widely reported improvements in electrical breakdown strength\, corona/discharge resistance\, suppression of space charge and varied dielectric permittivity. Unfortunately\, the detailed mechanisms leading to these improvements are not known yet. In addition\, there are also inconsistent/conflict electrical performance results presented in literature. It has been realized that the quality of samples is influenced by so many factors. If those factors are not strictly controlled during sample preparation\, discrepancy in the observed results should not be surprised. In this presentation\, the focus is placed on charge dynamics in nanocomposites and the influential factors. By combining the surface potential and space charge measurements\, it is possible to reveal trapped charge in nanocomposite adjacent to nanocomposite sample surface. This finding allows us to understand the mechanism of charge suppression in nanocomposites using deep traps introduced in the nanocomposites. Furthermore\, by measuring space charge in the two layered nanocomposite films with different concentrations of nanoparticles it explains why the charge suppression can only occur in those nanocomposites with a low concentration of nanoparticles. Initial simulation based on the bipolar charge transport model is used to validate the proposed charge trapping/transport processes in nanocomposites.

DESCRIPTION:Cable Assessment – Cable Rejuvenation 101 – Grid Reliability \nPresented by Wayne J. Chatterton\, PhD \nSouthwire Company\, USA \nMar. 12\, 2024\, at 2:00 PM ET/ 8:00 PM CET   \nAbstract- This webinar will introduce a basic understanding of Cable Assessment services that when combined with Cable Rejuvenation and Cable Replacement will lead to a more rapid and thorough capital rehabilitation of aged underground electrical distribution systems. The elementary understanding of appropriate assessment tests will be described\, and a detailed description of Cable Rejuvenation will be presented with an explanation of both why and how one should be injecting cables to provide electrical grid reliability. Aging cables can be treated with silicone rejuvenation fluid and take them to better than new. The AC breakdown strength will be significantly improved\, and the expected remaining life of these aged cables will be stretched by many decades. The environmental\, cost and resource benefits will be described. \nBio: Wayne J Chatterton\, Ph.D completed all of his degrees at the University of Toronto in Canada – B.Sc. 1985 (Organic Chemistry)\, M.Sc. 1987 (Organometallic Chemistry)\, and Ph.D 1990 (Silicone Chemistry). He spent 16 years in various roles at Dow Corning Corporation including the leader of the Cable Restoration team for 18 years. Wayne is a silicone chemist with expertise in fluids\, siloxanes and silicone rubber. He has studied the fundamental interactions between silicone injection fluids and cable insulations. Wayne spent his entire Dow Corning career in the Electrical Industry. He is an expert on transformer fluids\, rubber insulators and injection grade fluids. In 2006 he joined UtilX/Novinium Corporation as Director of Technology and is now the Technical Delivery Director at Southwire. These roles have allowed him a more direct interaction on the research of chemical cable rejuvenation fluids. Wayne holds numerous US and international patents on cable restoration and is the author of a number of papers on cable restoration and related technologies. Wayne is a member of IEEE Power Engineering Society and the Insulated Conductors Committee. He is a long standing member of ASTM committees D9 and D27 (Currently he is Chairman of D27-02). To this end\, making large-scale and long-term field lightning-strike observations\, large amount of and practical experiments\, and introducing new analysis techniques have enabled the development of advanced technologies capable of transforming conventional techniques. This webinar reviews what has been developed in the Japanese electric power company in this regard\, and specifically highlights the three fields of (1) Lightning current in actual field and lightning surge analysis\, (2) Basic insulation characteristics of GIS\, Transformer\, (3) Insulating test of lightning impulse\, AC\, PD. \n  \nBio: Shigemitsu OKABE received the Dr. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Tokyo in 1986. He had been with Tokyo Electric Power Company since 1986\, been the executive researcher since 2015\, and published about 400 peer-reviewed academic papers including 200 IEEE papers. He served as the visiting scientist at the TU Munich\, the guest professors at the Doshisha University and Nagoya university about 10 years each. Further he has worked as the secretary/member at several tens of AG/WG/MT in CIGRE and IEC. He received the Minister’s Award from MEXT in 2015\, the IEC Awards from TC42 in 2016\, from TC28/99 in 2017\, and the CIGRE Award from SC-D1 in 2018\, respectively. He had been the Associate Editor of the IEEE DEIS.
