The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation Society fellowship is awarded to IEEE DEIS members pursuing graduate research in the area of insulating materials, breakdown, charge transport, electrostatic phenomena, high voltage effects and related subjects.
2015 IEEE DEIS Fellows:
Ning Liu(S’13) was born in Anhui, China in 1990. He has received the B.Sc. degree from University of Liverpool and now he is a third-year PhD candidate from EEE group of University of Southampton. His research interest mainly focus on the space charge trapping/detrapping phenomenon and modelling in polymeric materials. His paper/poster ‘Investigation of charge trapping parameters in aged XLPE cables at different locations’ won the first prize in Jicable 2013 HVDC conference in Perpignan, France.

Thomas Heid studied electrical engineering at Graz University of Technology (Austria) where he graduated with an M.Sc. (2011), specializing in high voltage engineering. He was a project assistant at the Institute of High Voltage Engineering and System Management and the Test Institute of High Voltage Engineering (Graz, Austria) till 2012, where he has been involved in feasibility studies for high voltage cable systems, life cycle analysis for stator bars, as well as high voltage testing of power equipment.
Currently he is pursuing his Ph.D. at the École de Technologie Supérieure (ETS) in Montreal, in research cooperation with Hydro-Québec’s Research Institute (IREQ). His main research interest is the development of nanodielectrics for application in high voltage insulation systems.

Deep Jariwala was born in India in 1988. Deep is currently a Ph.D candidate in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Northwestern University. Deep received his B.Tech degree in Metallurgical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology-Banaras Hindu University (IIT-BHU) in 2010. In his doctoral research, Deep has worked on a variety of problems in nanoelectronics ranging from engineering dielctric-semiconductor interfaces to understanding charge transport in two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors and their heterostructures. His current research focus involves integration of 2D materials with dielectrics and other non-2D semiconductors for novel electronic device applications.

Myriam Koch was born in Germany in 1984. She received her diploma in electrical engineering in 2010 from RWTH Aachen, Germany. Since 2011 she is a PhD student at ETH Zürich, Switzerland, working at the high voltage laboratory. Her research focuses on partial discharge and breakdown mechanisms in electronegative gases in the context of SF6 replacement.

Christian Siket was born in 1986 in Linz, Austria. In 2012 he received his Diploma in Engineering Physics, at the Department of Soft Matter Physics (http://www.somap.jku.at/ ) of the Johannes Kepler University Linz, Austria. Currently, he is working on his Ph.D. on the fabrication and structuring of thin insulating oxide layers and their application in flexible electronic circuits. In the frame of his interdisciplinary Ph.D. work between chemistry, physics and electrical engineering he closely collaborates with the Department for Chemical Technology of Inorganic Materials (http://www.jku.at/ictas ).

Andrew Fierro was born in Odessa, Texas in 1986. He obtained his B.S. degree in Computer Science in 2009 and his M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering in 2011 on the topic of dielectric surface flashover. Andrew is currently pursuing his Ph.D. degree as a member of the Center for Pulsed Power and Power Electronics research group at Texas Tech University. His research is focused on the investigation of pulsed, low-temperature plasma formation by experimental and simulation techniques.

Peng Wang was born in Heze, Shandong, China, on October 23, 1982. He received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in 2004 and 2007 respectively, both from Southwest Jiaotong University, China. Since 2010, he started to pursue the Ph.D. degree in the School of Electrical Engineering of Southwest Jiaotong University. Currently, he is working as a visiting Ph.D. student in Bologna University, Italy. His research interests include the physics of partial discharges, reliability of electrical systems and partial discharge measurement at different voltage conditions.

Refat Atef Ghunem (S’11) was born in Damascus, Syria in 1986. He received B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees from the American University of Sharjah, Sharjah, UAE, in 2008 and 2010, respectively. He is currently a Ph.D. degree candidate at the University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Canada. From 2008 until 2010, he worked as an electrical engineer in the maintenance division at the Abu Dhabi Transmission and Despatch Company (TRANSCO). His research interests include polymeric materials for outdoor HVDC as well as condition monitoring and electrical insulation diagnostics.

Scott Harris was born on 12 September 1972, in Detroit, Michigan, USA. He studied Physics and Mathematics at Old Dominion University, Virginia where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in 1996. He studied Physics at Central Michigan University and received a Master of Science degree in 2012. He is currently a student in the Science of Advanced Materials PhD program at Central Michigan University. His research involves investigating the electrical and electrometrical properties of piezoelectric polymer foams (ferroelectrets) including the gas pressure dependence of space charge deposition in these materials and the subsequent effect upon their piezoelectric activity.
