IEEE DEIS Women In Engineering & Young Professionals Report

ICPADM_Thailand (4th – 7th August, 2024)

The 2024 International Conference on the Properties and Applications of Dielectric Materials (ICPADM) is the 14th meeting of this well-established conference series. Since its inception in June 1985, this conference has been supported by the IEEE Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation Society (DEIS), with a primary focus on advancing research and innovation in dielectric materials and electrical insulation. The conference attracts professionals and researchers from around the globe to share their insights and foster collaborations. This year’s conference featured several key activities, including a panel discussion organized by IEEE DEIS Women in Engineering (WIE) and IEEE DEIS Young Professionals (YP).

On August 6th, 2024, the panel discussion titled “Advancing Dielectrics: IEEE DEIS WIE & YP Collaboration” took place at Duangjitt Resort & Spa, Phuket, Thailand. The discussion was led by distinguished panelists Prof. Davide Fabiani, IEEE DEIS President and a professor at the University of Bologna, Italy, and Prof. Yoshimichi Ohki from Waseda University, Japan. The session was moderated by Gaurav Pathak from IEEE DEIS WIE and Ashok Narayan Tripathi from IEEE DEIS YP. The goal of this 40-minute panel was to explore the current advancements in dielectrics while also emphasizing collaboration between women engineers and young professionals in this field. The session was highly interactive, with participants encouraged to ask questions during the discussion, enriching the dialogue with diverse perspectives and fostering a deeper engagement with the audience.

Following the panel discussion, there were brief yet impactful presentations about the initiatives of IEEE DEIS YP and IEEE DEIS WIE. Ashok Narayan Tripathi provided a 5-minute informative session on the goals and activities of IEEE DEIS YP, highlighting the opportunities for young professionals to engage with the community, enhance their professional development, and contribute to the field of dielectric materials. Gaurav Pathak, representing IEEE DEIS WIE, delivered a similar 5-minute presentation focused on the initiatives of WIE, promoting gender diversity and inclusion within the dielectric and electrical insulation community. Both presentations underscored the importance of continuous learning, leadership, and collaboration within IEEE DEIS.

In addition to the panel and informative sessions, IEEE DEIS WIE and YP also managed exhibition stalls to increase visibility and outreach for the IEEE Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation Society. These stalls, strategically located at the venue, featured eye-catching standees representing both IEEE DEIS WIE and IEEE DEIS YP. The outreach efforts were further enhanced by distributing a variety of merchandise, including keychains, brochures, stickers, and pens, which served to draw attention to the initiatives and foster engagement with conference participants. The stalls were highly successful in generating interest and building connections within the dielectric materials community.

To conclude the session, a group photograph was taken with all participants, panelists, and moderators, marking a successful and collaborative event. This moment captured the essence of unity and shared purpose within the dielectric and electrical insulation community.
