Abstract: Assessment of the dielectric properties of the liquids for transformer applications is commonly conducted on the basis of designated standards. What is not a surprise, each of the dielectric liquids available on the market fulfils the standard criteria in terms of all necessary properties. However, when designing the insulating system of a transformer, it is important to know how the electric field stress changes with the change of the insulating liquid used as a dielectric medium in transformer. To do this, the tests conducted in a specially designed electrode systems may help in establishing the criteria in terms of design insulation level. Presentation will be devoted to show the experience from experimental studies on different insulating model electrode systems that are used for comparative tests of dielectric liquids of different origin. The presented results will be focused mostly on lightning impulse voltage, which, in many cases, is critical for choosing the insulating liquid for a given application. The analysis presented within the paper will use both quantitative results based on statistical analysis as well qualitative assessment based on original experimental approach.
Bio: Pawel Rozga received the PhD degree from the Lodz University of Technology, Poland, in 2009 in electrical engineering and since that time he has been working at the Institute of Electrical Power Engineering of Lodz University of Technology as University (Associate) Professor. He has been serving the position of Deputy Director of Development at the Institute being responsible for cooperation with industry partners. During his academia carrier he took a few internships in the renowned universities worldwide (Mississippi State University, USA; Lappeenranta University of Technology, Finland; Chongqing University, China). He has also completed several research projects in the field of liquid and solid insulation with special emphasis on industry-based projects. His fields of interest cover the areas of dielectric liquids, high-voltage engineering, measurement techniques and standardization as well as statistics in engineering applications. Dr. Rozga is a Senior Member of IEEE and is a vice-chair of the IEEE DEIS Technical Committee on Liquid Dielectrics. He is also serving as Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on DEI and is a member of the scientific committees of IEEE ICDL (chairman of the 2025 edition in Lodz, Poland) and IEEE ICEMPE.
