“Communicating Science” – Cycle of seminars for Young Researchers

Scientific work must be disseminated effectively to be of value to the international community. An important part of becoming a scientist is thus learning to write good research papers, present lectures and posters, and prepare research proposals. This workshop is aimed at young researchers to help them learn and practice these skills, with emphasis on research papers. The workshop instructors will be Prof. Raymond Boxman and Ms. Edith Boxman, authors of the book “Communicating Science, a practical guide for engineers and physical scientists”. Prof. Boxman is an IEEE Fellow and DEIS member. Both have extensive writing, editing, and teaching experience.

The course is offered by the IEEE DEI Society free of charge for up to 25 young DEIS members. Eligible researchers have submitted their first DEIS conference publication or paper in Transactions on Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation (TDEI) no longer than 2 years ago, or are currently preparing their first publication for TDEI. Part of the workshop will be practical exercises based on the participants’ writing.

The course will take place online on six days (March 31st, April 2, 4, 7, 9, and 11th 2025) at the following local times:

China                                17:00-19:00
Eastern Europe, Israel   12:00-14:00
Central Europe                11:00-13:00
Western Europe, UK      10:00-12:00
EDT                                   05:00-07:00

Small homework assignments will be given between the sessions to practice the material taught on your own paper. The homework will be reviewed by the course instructors, and you will be given feedback to improve.

Applications can be sent to the DEIS Educational Committee Chair (Prof. Christian Franck, [email protected]) containing the following documents and information:

  • Name, affiliation, IEEE membership number, and whether you’re a doctoral student or industry researcher.
  • Either a link to your first paper in TDEI or a DEIS conference, which must not be older than 2 years;
    Or alternatively, the title and preliminary abstract of a paper that you are currently working on and to where it will be submitted, together with a confirmation from your supervisor.
  • Written commitment to take the full course (attend the sessions and submit the homework)
  • Letter from your supervisor stating that this workshop participation is supported and confirming that sufficient time will be given to attend the full course and do the homework.

Application deadline is Saturday, March 15th. If there are more applications than available places, the decision will be made by drawing lots, taking geographical diversity into account.
