The Essay competition review panel has considered the essay submissions in 2014. It has been decided that there will be no winning essays as the DEIS 2014 Essay competition did not receive essays of high standard. However, there was one essay of a good standard submitted by Jun Jiang, a PhD candidate at North China Electric Power University (NCEPU). The essay with title: “All-fiber sensing technique for dissolved hydrogen detection in power transformer oil” can be viewed here.
Essay competition review panel feedback:
“The paper quoted is from a different university (The authors are with the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences and the National Laboratory of Solid State Microstructures, Nanjing University, Nanjing 210093, China ), so the requirement that the candidate should not be referring to the work of his own laboratory/institution is also complied with. Thus the essay has met the eligibility criteria of the competition. The essay contains a good description of the topic and describes what the chosen paper has achieved. In particular it states what has been learned from the chosen paper (i.e. the use of the Pd-photonic crystal fibre as more sensitive than the Fibre Bragg Grating) and how those ideas are being input into the candidates research (i.e. concentrating on photonic crystal sensors and trying to evaluate their application in real transformers). However, the English grammar is not always accurate.”
