In Memory of Bruce Bernstein

Bruce Bernstein, long time DEIS and PES member, passed away unexpectedly on Nov. 29, 2020 at the age of 89. Bruce was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and was educated at City University of New York and Iowa State University, where he obtained his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in organic chemistry. Bruce joined the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) in Washington in 1977. He served in both staff and management positions, becoming target leader of the Underground Distribution Program before his retirement in 2001. Later, he established a consulting practice, serving the industry in the field of electrical installation until his final year.

Bruce served as a member of the DEIS AdCom multiple times (1979-1985, 1988-1993, and 2002-2007). He also served as a board member of the CEIDP (1986-1989). He became an IEEE fellow in 1992 for “pioneering research leading to understanding of aging phenomena of extruded dielectric high voltage power cables.” He was also active on the IEEE Insulated Conductors Committee, the American Chemical Society, and CIGRE.

Bruce is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Valerie (nee Gordon); his sons, Neil and Mark (Carolyn Weiss) Bernstein; and his cherished granddaughter, Lila. Additional memorial remarks will be included in a future issue of the Electrical Insulation Magazine.
