Polypropylene based Cable Insulation Materials

Presented by Prof. Jinliang He Director and Professor, High Voltage and Insulation Research Institute, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China

July 11 2023, 8 AM CET/ 2 PM CST (Beijing)

Abstract: With the development of renewable energy, especially the offshore wind power, cable power transmission is becoming very important. High thermo-resistance, strong insulating performance, recyclable nature, and superior anti-aging characteristics make up the requirements of the next generation HV cable insulation material. Traditional crosslinking polyethylene cable insulation cannot meet these requirements. In recent years, polypropylene (PP)-based insulation materials have been well studied in different technical routes, among which, the PP-based grafting modification technology provides a nearly perfect solution to these demands. By chemically modifying the molecular structure of PP, the macroscopic electrical properties especially under high temperature can be significantly enhanced, meanwhile exhibiting excellent anti-aging performance and universality in either AC or DC cables.

This webinar commences with the application background of PP-based cable insulation, and summarizes the progress in the development of recyclable high voltage cable insulation materials. The advanced aqua-phase grafting technology, multi-scale and multi-dimension characterizations on the material with corresponding mechanisms are exhibited and discussed. The situations of industrial production and milestone application in HV cable systems are also introduced briefly. As the finale, the prospectives of the grafting-modified PP cable insulation and some problems which deserve in-depth investigation are presented.
